WASHINGTON - Virginia Democrat Rep. Gerry Connolly revealed on Monday that he will not run for reelection in 2026 and will step down from his position on the House Oversight Committee due to the return of his esophageal cancer.

Last year, Connolly, 75, shared his cancer diagnosis and began treatment. Unfortunately, he announced on X that the cancer has resurfaced despite initial treatment success.
In a heartfelt message, Connolly expressed pride in his 30-year career and gratitude for the support of his family, staff, and constituents. He highlighted accomplishments in postal service, transportation, and federal workforce improvement efforts.
Connolly, currently in his ninth term representing Virginia's 11th district, played a key role in the House Oversight Committee. His departure has sparked discussions about potential successors, including Massachusetts Democrat Rep. Stephen Lynch and New York Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Sen. Tim Kaine praised Connolly's dedication and leadership, emphasizing his contributions to Virginia and the nation. Kaine pledged to support Connolly and his family during this challenging time.
