Tragic Crash Claims Lives of 3 Children and 1 Adult at Youth Program in Illinois

The three children and one young adult who were tragically killed in a devastating crash at a youth program in Illinois have been identified.

The victims of the crash include Kathryn Corley, 7; Alma Buhnerkempe, 7; Ainsley Johnson, 8; and Rylee Britton, 18, according to Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon. They were pronounced deceased at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver, identified as 44-year-old Marianne Akers, of Chatham, was not in custody as the cause of the crash is still under investigation. Officials have stated that the incident does not appear to be a targeted attack.

The tragic crash occurred on April 28 at around 3:20 p.m. when a vehicle crashed into the YNOT After School Camp in Chatham, resulting in four deaths and injuries to six children who were taken to hospitals. One child remains in critical condition as of April 29.

Following the crash, the driver was taken to a hospital for evaluation, and toxicology reports are pending, according to state police.

YNOT Outdoors, a nonprofit organization offering summer programs for children, hosts events at various locations in Chatham, including the building where the tragic incident occurred.

The organization provides a safe and fun environment for children, offering activities such as fishing, hiking, and field sports. Staff counselors undergo thorough interviews and background checks to ensure the safety of the children in their care.

The building that was struck in the crash is where YNOT hosts its after-school programs and summer camps, providing a place for children to engage in positive and enriching activities.
