During his papacy, Francis broke barriers by using affirming language, meeting with LGBTQ+ individuals, and supporting policies that promoted acceptance within the church. The impact of his actions cannot be overstated.

He also called for a synod that included voices of marginalized groups, including LGBTQ+ individuals, leading to increased visibility and acceptance within Catholic institutions.

As the LGBTQ+ community mourns Francis' death, there is concern about the direction the next pope may take. Will the progress made under Francis be maintained, or will there be a reversal of acceptance?

Despite the uncertainty, there is hope that the new pope, influenced by Francis' appointments and the global synod, will continue to prioritize inclusivity and acceptance within the Catholic Church.

Regardless of the future pope, LGBTQ+ Catholics are determined to advocate for full inclusion and recognition of their identities in the church and society.

Marianne Duddy-Burke, executive director of DignityUSA, shares insights on the impact of Pope Francis and the potential path ahead for LGBTQ+ Catholics.
