WASHINGTON - Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made it clear to President Donald Trump that Canada is "not for sale" during their meeting in the Oval Office following Carney's recent election victory.

Carney stated, "As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale. Having met with the owners of Canada over the course of the campaign, it's not for sale. It won't be for sale ever."
He emphasized that the focus should be on partnership and collaboration between the two countries.
Carney capitalized on Trump's previous comments about Canada, including his suggestion of making Canada the "51st state," to secure his election win. Carney replaced Justice Trudeau as Canada's prime minister.
During the meeting, Trump reiterated his belief that Canada would benefit from being part of the United States, citing advantages such as tax cuts and access to services.
Despite the differences in opinion, Trump expressed optimism, saying, "Time will tell. It's only time. But I say, never say never."
The meeting took place against the backdrop of trade tensions caused by Trump's tariffs on Canadian imports.
Carney thanked Trump for his hospitality and leadership, acknowledging his focus on the economy and American workers.
