Gunmen opened fire on police in Dagestan, killing three officers and injuring at least four others on Monday, according to regional authorities.
Dagestan leader Sergei Melikov stated that the shooting took place when traffic officers attempted to pull over the assailants' car.
The attack happened around 2 p.m. local time in Makhachkala, as reported by the interior ministry.
Two of the shooters were killed, identified by name and year of birth (2000) by a city administration spokesman on Telegram.
The exact number of shooters involved remains unclear, but other perpetrators fled the scene in a car, as per state media.
Video footage shared on Telegram and confirmed by Reuters showed bodies on the street next to a police vehicle, with gunshots heard in the background.
Two additional shooters, two police officers, and multiple injured civilians, including a 17-year-old girl, were taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, at least one of them later succumbed to their injuries. A criminal case has been initiated by authorities.
Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim region, has experienced several deadly attacks in recent years, including the killing of four ISIS-affiliated militants in March by counter-terrorism forces.
