One person was killed and more than a dozen wounded when gunfire erupted at a family party in Houston early Sunday, authorities said.
Assistant Police Chief Patricia Cantu said multiple people were detained for questioning and that it was unclear whether the person who began the shooting was among those being interviewed. She said the incident began as a family barbecue.
"They had an uninvited guest, the univited guest was asked to leave," Cantu said at a briefing. "As he was leaving he began shooting in the area. There was return fire from residents as well."
Cantu said multiple people were hospitalized in critical condition and others were in stable condition. Some of the wounded self-transported, so exact numbers were not available. Investigators were seeking out those people to find out more about what happened.
Cantu said officers arrived within minutes of the first 911 calls, which came in shortly after midnight Saturday. She lauded the officers for providing security at multiple shooting scenes and providing a secure area for fire and rescue personnel.
"It was chaotic from the get-go," Cantu said.
